Outside Ski Pressure

Your turns will suddenly feel grounded and confident instead of tipsy — proper outside-ski loading is the single biggest unlock for intermediate skiers.

Key Moments

0:35Which ski is the outside skiStep 1

It changes with every turn — the outside ski is the one on the outside of the arc, away from center

1:20Driving pressure onto itStep 2

As the turn initiates, shift your hip toward the outside ski and feel it load under your foot

2:40The 70-30 ruleStep 3

70% of your weight on the outside ski through the arc — 30% on the inside for balance

4:00Feeling the gripStep 4

Proper outside-ski pressure creates a sensation of being pushed into the slope — not sliding across it

What It Should Feel Like

  • Standing firmly on one leg through the whole arc — outside ski grips while the inside ski is light
  • A building pressure under the outside foot that peaks at the bottom of the arc
  • Confidence and stability replacing the wobbly sensation of evenly-split weight

Common Mistakes & Fixes

Equal weighting on both skis causing the outside ski to wash out

Consciously press the outside ski harder — think about pushing through the outside heel

Shifting weight too late after the turn has already started

Begin the weight shift as you initiate the turn — the pressure should be building from the start

Inside ski crossing over the outside

Keep the inside ski parallel and light — it should follow the outside, not fight it

Practice Drills

1

Lifted inside ski: raise your inside ski tip slightly off the snow through each turn — proves you have genuine outside-ski dominance

2

Heel press: consciously press through the heel of your outside boot at the bottom of each arc — the heel is the most reliable pressure point

3

One-ski run: ski 30 meters on just the outside ski per turn, actively changing feet between arcs — the extreme version builds the feeling fast
