Snowboard Chairlift Basics
You'll make lift rides feel routine instead of stressful, which means more energy for actual riding and fewer awkward unload crashes.
Loading, riding, and unloading the chairlift with one foot free and enough composure to clear the ramp cleanly.
Watch & Learn
Key Moments
Shuffle into the loading zone with the board pointed straight and your free foot ready to stabilize.
As the chair scoops you up, keep the board lined with the ramp rather than letting it swing sideways.
Stand smoothly, place the free foot on the stomp pad, and ride clear before trying to turn.
What It Should Feel Like
- ✓Quiet and predictable, not rushed
- ✓The board glides away flatter than you expect
- ✓You leave the unload area before making any big movement
Common Mistakes & Fixes
Trying to turn immediately off the chair
Ride straight for a moment first, then make your turn once you have space.
Letting the nose drift sideways while loading
Aim the board at the loading groove and keep your hips aligned with it.
Panicking if balance gets shaky
Use the free foot on the stomp pad and focus on gliding away, not on looking graceful.
Practice Drills
Unload rehearsal: on gentle terrain, practice standing up and gliding one-footed in a straight line for several meters.
Straight-off challenge: each lift exit, count to two before turning so straight gliding becomes your default.
One-foot stop zone: after unloading, practice slowing yourself under control before re-strapping.
